San Pedro Bay Ports - Drayage Ecosystem

How might we understand the drayage market ecosystem, stakeholders, and experience?
The drayage market ecosystem has many stakeholders and equipment interacting at the ports to help ship goods across the country. We visited the San Pedro Bay Ports to better understand the interdependencies between stakeholders, their experiences, and the future of port technology as the world moves towards zero emissions. This collaborative effort helped inform future product planning for both our electrified business and engine business and illuminated insights beyond the powertrain.
We visited the Port of LA and Port of Long Beach, job shadowing and meeting with a variety of stakeholders including port authorities, port operators, local non-profits, utility companies, and fleet customers in the drayage application. This ethnographic approach gave us a deeper understanding of the ecosystem.
We gathered all the voices and direct quotes from our visits, we analyzed trends, and synthesize insights to generate understanding and opportunities within this ecosystem.
I helped orchestrate and lead creative facilitation for participatory design research that we conducted with all our stakeholders. We customized each engagement based on our goals, time, and people we were meeting. I also shared my knowledge with my fellow researchers to empower them to try new techniques for voice of customer engagement.
