IU Health: Security & Hospitality
DESIGN RESEARCH, DESIGN STRATEGY
-
How might the design of the behavioral health entry enhance first impressions and mitigate stigmas for patients and visitors?
-
How might we humanize security measures within the emergency department to meet patient and staff needs while still providing a welcoming experience?
I had the privilege of working with patients and hospital staff at IU Health to better understand the balance between hospitality and security. My colleague and I focused on two areas of the hospital: the Behavioral Health Unit and the Emergency Department. We made recommendations for future designs of the spaces based on the design research.
Lisa Semidey and I conducted interviews, observations, in-person surveys, and provided worksheets for the patients and staff to complete. We then synthesized the findings into insights and generated recommendations.
In the Emergency Department the journey map allows us to understand where and when pain points occur and the stakeholders that are engaged during that time.
